Two recent releases; Penguin on Amazon Prime Video and Bulbbul on Netflix, put women at the centre of their stories.
Both are unconventional stories and have an element of mystery and thrill. While Penguin is a mother's journey to find her missing son, Bulbbul is all about revenge. The former is all drama and emotion, while the latter has all that plus the supernatural element! But what ties both films is that we have actresses carrying these films on their shoulders.
Keerthy Suresh in Penguin is superlative as the grieving mother. She is strong and vulnerable, and the actress takes you along with her in her journey. Her body language, her expressions, her performance, makes you connect with the character.
Tripti Damri embraces her role in Bulbbul with open arms. You can feel her predicament, her pain and her anger. The supernatural element of the story telling does not take over her performance. She is in company of some amazing actors in Rahul Bose and Avinash Tiwary. And she holds her own in this scary revenge narrative.
