Dil Bechara: Love life, seri!

Updated: Jul 31, 2020

Remakes are always a challenge. And more so, if the film is a remake of a Hollywood film which in turn is based on a novel. But the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer Dil Bechara manages to impress and surprise even those who would have seen the movie or read the book The Fault In Our Stars.

Kizie Basu has the least exciting life of a college student. Of course, the fact that she has cancer just makes her all the more gloomy and depressed about her existence. But all this changes when she meets Immanuel Rajkumar aka Manny. He is everything Kizie is not. He is brash, fun and celebrates every moment of his life. And yes, he is a crazy Rajinikanth fan!

The first time Kizie and Manny meet is like any other meeting of a couple or as in Kizie's words, a typical Bollywood situation. But then there is nothing normal about these two. What is normal about getting together to make a movie or setting out on a crazy adventure to find Kizie's favourite singer Abhimanyu. In all this, love and life happens. How these two young lovers make the most of what life has handed out to them, is what Dil Bechara is all about.

The Actors:

No one could have played Manny but Sushant Singh Rajput. The actor brings a certain innocence and vulnerability to the character. His charm, his smile, every bit of him is a joy to watch. You can't but fall in love with him. Yes, it does leave a lump in the throat, especially when you realise that this is his last movie!

Sanjana Sanghi plays Kizie with all her heart. She embraces every quirk and nuance. She brings the pain, fear and struggle of a cancer patient with intensity and sincerity.

Swastika Mukherjee is a dream. The way she has transformed herself to play a Kizie's mother is amazing. It is hard to believe that she is the same actress who played the diva Anguri Devi in the Sushant starrer Detective Byomkesh Bakshy.

Saif Ali Khan as usual never disappoints. Though he is a special appearance, he is a scene-stealer. The rest of the cast, be it Saswata Chatterjee as Kizie's father or Sahil Vaid who plays Manny's friend JP, do a wonderful job playing their parts to the T.

The Creators:

Shashank Khaitan and Suprotim Sengupta have beautifully adapted the story to make Dil Bechara a unique experience. They give us sweet romantic moments, intense dramatic situations and cute funny incidents as well. And of course Mukesh Chhabra makes a memorable debut as director. The blend of Hindi and Bengali dialogues with a sprinkling of Tamil, makes the movie stand out. And full marks to him for choosing an almost perfect cast.

AR Rahman's music is the soul of Dil Bechara. Every song captures the emotions of the film thanks to Amitabh Bhattacharya's heartfelt words. And of course, the background score is mesmerising.

The camera work by Satyajit Pande is top-notch. Every frame captures the beauty of the surroundings, be it Jamshedpur or Paris.

Dil Bechara is a movie that will remain in the hearts of movie audiences. It is definitely a film to watch if you have ever been in love, seri!
